Zoysia
grass is originally from the temperate areas of Asia and is native to Japan,
China and Southeast Asia. There are records of it being in common use as
far back as the 12th century. Zoysia was named to commemorate an 18th century
Austrian botanist, Karl von Zois (1756-1800), who was a "country gentleman"
and plant collector. Zoysia grass is believed to have come to America in
the early 20th century from Manila and is sometimes called Manila grass.
Zoysia can be grown in various soil types and is salt tolerant. Color ranges
from medium to dark green and the texture is very fine.
